After an extended time of touch deprivation when we couldn’t even offer a soothing hand to comfort someone, let alone give and receive hugs from our nearest and dearest, touch therapy has never been more vital.
Touch releases oxytocin which counteracts all the stress hormones. So on top of the obvious stresses of the pandemic, the lack of touch in itself will have raised levels of stress hormones. Reflexology and head massage have been shown to reduce anxiety levels by activating the parasympathetic nervous system to moderate, calm and relax the stress response.
